Antoine Fuqua's film for Netflix, starring Denzel Washington as the Carthaginian general Hannibal, begins shooting this summer in Italy, with the production based at Cinecittà Studios, according to Variety. Pre-production, and location scouting for the film - written by John Logan, three-time Oscar winner and behind Martin Scorsese's The Aviator and Ridley Scott's Gladiator - is already underway in Italy, believed to be the location for most of the principal photography.
The official synopsis tells us that the film is "based on the story of the real-life warrior Hannibal, widely considered one of history's greatest military commanders. The film chronicles his pivotal battles against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War."
Denzel Washington – who previously shot in Italy and at Cinecittà Studios for Antoine Fuqua’s The Equalizer 3 – is a producer on the film alongside Erik Olsen, Adam Goldworm, Todd Black, Clayton Townsend, and Fuqua, through a first-look deal between Hill District Media and Netflix. Executive producers include: Scott Greenberg, Kat Samick, Katia Washington, Frank Moll, Jeremy Lott.
