Where it was filmed 'A mamma non piace'

A mamma non piace is based on the novel by Gianluca Gemelli, winner of the third edition of the "Una Storia per il Cinema" literary prize.

It is the story of Alina, a Belarusian immigrant who fled a past of poverty. A sadistic, yet humorous, fate confronts her with the worst nightmare of her past, but at the same time offers her a way out. To preserve her freedom, she overcomes her disgust to accept the well-paid job offered by Giuliano, owner of the isolated and disturbing Villa Baldassare: caring for his beloved mother, Lucrezia, who has passed away!

Monica Carpanese stars as Alina with fragility and determination, Claudio Botosso is Giuliano, an enigmatic and talkative figure, while Federico Tocci plays awkward, rude Loris.

The cast includes Massimo Bonetti, Gigi Miseferi, Lucia Batassa, Manuela Montanaro, Jessica Pizzi, Giovanni Di Guida, Antonia Russo, Cristiana Caremoli. The backdrop for the gripping and suspenseful story is Lazio, in the area between the Castelli Romani and Sabina, comprising ancient villas and Roman roads, the witnesses to a millennia-old past.

The film sits at the intersection of a range of genres - noir, with clear references to the "master of suspense", fun, unexpected comedy, and the drama of a woman from a complex, poverty-stricken world in Belarus – while the atmosphere remains buoyant, imbued with a hint of the grotesque.

Plot

Alina, a Belarusian immigrant who fled a past of poverty, is often forced to deal with mistrust, racism, and... blackmail! A sadistic, yet humorous, fate forces her to confront the worst nightmare of her past while simultaneously offering her a way out. Freedom, unfortunately, comes at a price, and Alina decides to put aside her fear and disgust by taking a well-paid, but decidedly "unusual" job. Alina convinces herself that caring for a taciturn elderly woman in a villa fit for a film noir, with good macabre humour and sparkling, daring travel companions, isn't such a bad thing after all. Or is it?!
