Standing on the shore of Lago di Bracciano, 32.7km North East of Rome, Anguillara Sabazia is considered part of the Metropolitan city of Roma Capitale. Although archive documents record its foundation in the 11th century, the history of Anguillara Sabazia is tightly linked to the ancient populations who had already occupied the area during the Neolithic period. Traces of the Roman era can be found in the ruins that have come to light in three areas: the Acqua Claudia complex, the Walls of Santo Stefano, Via Clodia.
The historical centre of Anguillara was built over the structures of houses dating to Roman times on the promontory where the village stands today. The architectural and artistic features of the town include the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta, the frescoed town palace; the medieval houses with their overlapping rooms and central staircase; the churches of Madonna delle Grazie, St. Francis with frescoes (15th century) and St. Blaise (16th century); and ancient entrance to the city, a 16th century gate beneath a clock which is now attached by a 16th century bastion to a medieval tower that hosts the Museo della civiltà contadina e della cultura popolare (Museum of farming civilization and popular culture).
