The Castle of Passerano on via Prenestina stands on a hill of tuff rock in the countryside of Gallicano nel Lazio (RM), flanked by the gorges of Acqua Nera and Passerano.
Probably built in the 10th century, it is documented in a Papal Bull by Pope Leo VIII which attributes the property to the Monastery of Subiaco. Its present-day appearance is mostly due to the modifications carried out in the 1300s. Destroyed in the 16th century during the invasion of the Duke of Alba, it was rebuilt in the previous style.
The castle has been property of the Region of Campania since 1970 and its surrounding 900 hectares have been used for years to breed cattle.
