Populonia, an ancient Etruscan town located on a hill and surrounded by the sea, is located 15km from Piombino. It is one of the most important records we have of the Etruscan civilisation. Its Medieval walls and fortress, which were built in the early 15th century, surround the centre of the town, which affords a spectacular view over the Gulf of Baratti.
