The Mendola Funicular Railway in the South Tyrol runs from Sant’Antonio (Caldaro) up to the Mendola Pass. Along its current 2370 metre route, lasting 12 minutes, the railway climbs up a total of 854 metres, from 510 m a.s.l. up to 1364 metres, with a gradient of between 57 and 64 per cent.
The Mendola Funicular Railway officially began running on 19 October 1903, and its most illustrious passenger was the Emperor Franz Josef, who took it in 1905 on his way to the Val di Non to take part in important military manoeuvres. At the beginning of 2009, the Mendola Funicular Railway was equipped with nine new carriages; while in August 2009 a mid-way station was opened, making it accessible to hikers coming from the Alta Via di Caldaro high mountain route.
