Nazzano Tevere-Farfa Regional Nature Reserve was the first protected nature reserve established by the Regione Lazio in 1979. Its name comes from the three key natural elements in its territory: the River Tiber, its tributary Farfa and small Lake Nazzano created when a dam was built in the Tiber beneath the town of the same name.
The countryside is characterised by the morphology of the River Tiber which meanders slowly through this area, creating wide bays. The most important element in this territory is the water which, reflecting the green of the surrounding vegetation, encourages a flourishing population of birds typical of wetland areas.
