The Nomentum Nature Reserve is a protected area of approx. 850 hectares that stretches over hills between Mentana, Fonte Nuova and Monterotondo in the Province of Rome, amidst the green areas of Macchia Trentani, Valle Cavallara, Macchia Mancini, the archaeological area of Monte d'Oro, part of Casali di Mentana, the historical centre of Mentana and the agricultural area of Monte Pizzuto.
Small woods alternate with olive groves, arable and cultivated fields and urban areas. Alongside are also numerous archaeological ruins, including: the walls in square tuff rock dating to the 4th century BCE that encircled the ancient Latin-Sabine stronghold of Nomentum in Montedoro, and remains of the paving of the Roman-era via Nomentana which crossed the residential centre near a paved forum.
There are remains of rustic farmhouses and of numerous luxurious villas dating to the Imperial Roman era, often with thermal baths featuring painted plaster, slabs of marble, mosaic tiling, heating and water pipes. Some of the finds from the area are now conserved in the Museo Nazionale Romano.
