Description

Founded in the 14th century, Acireale (province of Catania) developed economically and culturally in the 1600s when the Spanish dubbed it the “royal city”. The therapeutic properties of its sulphuric water source were well known since Roman times. The complex of the Baths of Santa Venera is located at the foot of mount Etna, perched on a cliff surrounded by panoramic terraces and an English garden. It was built in neoclassic style in 1873 on an impulse by Baron Pennisi di Floristella. The Regione Siciliana bought the baths in 1951. A second thermal complex, the Baths of Santa Caterina, was built in 1987 in the nearby hamlet of Santa Caterina.
