Alcamo, in South Western Sicily was founded by the Arabs who named it Alqamah (fertile land) passing to Norman and Swabian control and later to the estate of the Counts of Modica, as the castle, today part of the town, demonstrates. Situated at the foot of mount Bonifato, it is now a large agricultural centre that dominates the gulf of Castellammare.
There are numerous Baroque monuments including the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta (Chiesa Madre) in piazza IV Novembre, dating to the 14th century and rebuilt in the 17th century, which houses works of notable artistic merit. The square intersects with corso VI Aprile where the Church of Madonna delle Grazie and the Church of Saints Paul and Bartholomew, with Baroque interiors, are located. The palazzo comunale, the Church del Collegio with its large round clock and the Church of St. Oliva can all be found in piazza Ciullo.
The hamlet of Alcamo Marina is located a few kilometres down the Tyrrhenian coast.
