Description

Torre delle Ciavole is located in the municipality of Piraino (province of Messina), perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, accessed by a 30m long protrusion. The two-storey building has a square base with a terrace overlooking the sea and is one of the defensive systems designed by Camillo Camilliani in the 16th century. The soldiers manning the tower were on the lookout for passing ships and pirate incursions. Its name derives from ciavole, crows in Sicilian dialect, which were abundant in the area between shore and countryside.
