Perched on a small tuff rock above the River Fosso del Borgonero on one side and the Petrella spring on the other, the borgo of Civitella Cesi rises amidst the woodland of the Blera countryside (VT). Originally settled by the Etruscans as the many ruined necropolises (700-400 BCE) demonstrate, the area is dominated by the Castle of Civitella Cesi built in the Middle Ages when the settlement was at the height of its splendour.
The feudal property, which had belonged to various families of Rome, passed to Giovanni Torlonia in the 19th century and Pope Pius VII (1800-1823) nominated him Prince of Civitella Cesi.
