The Civic Theatre of Merano, also known as the Puccini Theater, was built in 1900, in just 14 months. Located in the heart of the city in Piazza Teatro, between Corso Libertà and Ponte Teatro, the theatre is an important architectural complex and ideal place not only for theatrical and musical performances but also for cinematic representations, readings and conferences.
In the Seventies the theatre was closed down following a fire, and did not reopen until 28 November 1978, after it had been fully restored. In 2000, further work was completed on the roof, and the facade, in neoclassical style and with elements of Art Nouveau, was repainted in the original colours. The interior consists of an elegant foyer, a lounge with 296 velvet armchairs, dressing rooms for artists, a bar and a terrace.
