Liberty Style in Turin

Torino, TO, Italia

Description

Liberty is the Italian appelation for the Art Nouveau style - coined after London merchant Arthur Lasenby Liberty, who founded the landmark company that produced fine items of decorative and applied arts in the Art Nouveau style - complete with a flagship store located in Milan at the historic Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Style Liberty, from its beginning, beacame a definitve style of the Italian middle class, who cherished an affinity for the new aesthetic movement, with commissions, by and large, for private buildings and monumental tombs of the urban cemeteries of the early 1900s.

The first International Exposition of Modern Decorative Art, held in Turin, popularised the Liberty Style distinguishing Art Nouveau in Italy with a passionate enthusiasm that in a short time succeeded in influencing architects and scholars of the apllied and decorative arts, who were enthralled by the myriad unique and exquisite objects. In Turin, the archetypal figure of Art Nouveau creation is, without a doubt, architect and engineer Pietro Fenoglio, whose work still stands exquisite testimony throughout the city, particularly along the first section of Corso Francia. Even when Art Nouveau lost some of its definition, the style remained unchanged in its most characteristic features: the turrets and pinnacles and the decorative elements of wrought iron ornaments and colorful stained-glass windows.
