Description

The Monastery of Sant’Onofrio in Casacalenda (province of Campobasso) was founded by the Beato Giovanni da Stroncone between 1415-1418 and intended as a monastic retreat. In 1883 it became property of the municipality. After WWII, the monastery was restored and expanded. In the 1960s, a new wing was built to host ecclesiastical groups for retreats and other events. It was considered unsafe for several years following earthquake damage and could not be used until its complete restoration in 2016.

The monastery has an ancient cloister, whose inner walls are decorated with original mural paintings. The church, part of the religious complex, has two naves and a chapel in the apse divided by a lateral nave, with a stone gallery. It houses notable artwork, including the main altar which is decorated with friezes in highest quality multi-coloured marble and paintings, such as those in the choir: the polyptych of the Annunciation (1607) and the Last Supper (earlier than 1722) are both attributed to the painter Antonio Solari of the Flemish school of Hendricksz Dirck.
