Atri, in antiquity Hatria Picena, stands at 442m above sea level in the province of Teramo. The town has an interesting history and conserves precious relics from the past such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (late 12th century), one of the best preserved and most beautiful examples of religious architecture in Abruzzo. The majestic facade in Istrian stone has an elegant Gothic portal and large rose window but the Cathedral is particularly famous for the bright colours of the frescoes in the choir, a masterpiece by Andrea de Litio. The adjacent museum houses precious relics. The Cathedral leads to the Cloister and a surprising Roman cistern (3rd century BCE) beneath the presbytery. Also worthy of note is the Palazzo Ducale degli Acquaviva, present seat of the municipality, which dates to the first half of the 1300s.
