Ducal Palace of Larino

Palazzo Ducale, Piazza Duomo, Larino, CB, Italia

Description

The Ducal Palace of Larino (CB) was probably built by the Normans between 1100 and 1200 for defensive purposes. The original, slim structure was later transformed into an imposing complex on a quadrangular layout which surrounds a large courtyard with a portico. The castle was home to many noble families, including the De Sangro who, in 1683, made the building into a noble residence.

It became property of the municipality in the 1800s when the facades were restored. Today the palace houses the municipality offices, the “Bartolomeo Preziosi” Municipal Library and the Civic Museum, where the permanent archaeological exhibition Ars et Ingenium displays various artefacts from the Roman Amphitheatre and surrounding areas, with items dating from 10th century B.C.E. to 4th century C.E..
