Legend connects the borgo of Maenza (LT) to the Etruscan king Mezentius, cited in Book 10 of the Aeneid. Its territory, mostly hills, is surrounded by a range of mountains, including Monte Gemma, Monte Sentinella and Monte Calvello, with large swathes of land covered with chestnut and beech woods, elms and oaks. Like many other small medieval centres, the history of Maenza is intertwined with the fortunes of the dominant overlords. The families that owned Maenza through time included the Annibaldi, Caetani, Borgia, Aldobrandini, Doria Pamphili, Borghese, De Cabanis and the Peccis. However, it was the family of the Counts of Ceccano that were most tightly linked to Maenza. The village’s architectural features include the Baronial Castle and the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption.
