Varco Sabino (RI) is a small borgo that rises approx. 750m above sea level on the mountains that separate the Valley del Salto from the Valley del Turano inside the Nature Reserve of Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia. It is surrounded by lush vegetation with woods of elm, turkey oak and hornbeam and sprawling forests of sweet chestnut which date back to cultivations from ancient times and whose trees reach significant dimensions in several areas.
Built in the 15th century by the inhabitants of the nearby village of Mirandella which was destroyed in a violent earthquake, the borgo derives its name and importance from its close proximity with the crossing place (a perfectly preserved Roman bridge) that connected the Sabine area with Abruzzo in antiquity.
The noteworthy Church of St. Jerome in the historical centre preserves a bas-relief of a 15th century processional cross.
