Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore in Alatri (FR), formerly known as Piazza del Campo, is located on the site of the Roman forum. It has preserved its function in terms of urban flow, crossed by the main thoroughfares of the town centre and gathering the main civil and religious buildings of Alatri: Palazzo del Comune, its eastern flank designed by Raffaele Boretti in 1863; the 13th century Collegiata di Santa Maria Maggiore, which is balanced by the Chiesa degli Scolopi adjacent to Palazzo Conti Gentili on the other side.
In the centre of the square is the imposing Pia fountain, designed by Giuseppe Olivieri and built in 1870, dedicated to Pope Pius IX who had endowed the town with a large sum of money to build a new aqueduct.
