The former monastic complex of Santa Maria in Valle Christi dates to the 1200s and is located in the hills of the hamlet of San Massimo, in Rapallo (GE). Inscribed in the list of national monuments, it is one of the few remaining examples of Gothic architecture in Liguria. The structure of the church is Gothic-Romanesque with a Latin cross layout. The large apse has a cross vault and is flanked by two side apses. The back of the apse is flat and there are two quadrangular chapels in the side apses typical of Gothic-Cistercian churches. The tall bell tower in terracotta has a Lombard band and triple lancet windows in marble.
The area of the former monastery is used today as a picturesque setting for musical and theatrical performances.
