La Spezia is located in Eastern Liguria in the centre of the gulf of Poets. Sandwiched between sea and mountains, the city has always been strongly influenced by Genoa, as the characteristic carruggi and the shape of the buildings attest.
La Spezia boomed in the second half of the 1800s, thanks to the huge military shipyard created by the Savoys. The city became the setting for Italy’s Belle Époque, represented today by the Umbertino neighbourhood and public park, and Art Deco prevailed on building facades in the historical centre, e.g. Palazzo Maggiani, Palazzo Contesso, Palazzo del Ghiaccio and Villa Marmori.
The coastline boardwalk of the city is named after Costantino Morin and is embellished with palms and floral compositions. It offers a fantastic view over the gulf of Poets and a departure point for ferries to Portovenere, the Cinque Terre and Lerici. The territory belongs to the Cinque Terre National Park.
