Rocca di Ponte di Torre – Este

Este, Via Vigo di Torre, Este, Padova, Italy

Description

The Rocca di Ponte di Torre in Este (Padua), which defended the ancient walled city against threats from Verona for centuries, rises alongside the Frassine river and is one of the few Medieval defensive structures still standing in the territory. Comprising an encircling wall and a square tower, the structure was part of an extended system of fortified lookouts built between the 12th and 13th centuries, positioned in defence of the access ways to Este.
After being destroyed, probably by Ezzelino da Romano, and later occupied by the Scaligeri family, the Rocca della Torre was rebuilt in the mid 1300s by the Carraresi family to its present state. The Venetians added a floor to the tower bringing it to 24 metres in total. Decommissioned from military functions in 1597, the building was ceded to Venice by the City of Este.
