Basilica of Santa Anastasia – Verona

Basilica di Santa Anastasia, Piazza S.Anastasia, Verona, VR, Italy

Description

The Basilica of Santa Anastasia is the largest church in Verona and the city’s most significant Gothic building.  Building began in 1290 and continued for 150 years.
The terracotta façade is divided vertically into three sections (corresponding to the naves inside) and, while incomplete, is both imposing and solemn.  Inside three broad naves are surrounded by 12 columns of Verona red marble. Five chapels open off the transept, while the Giusti Chapel, an ancient oratory belonging to the convent, can be accessed on the left.
The magnificent entrance portal is decorated with frescoes and sculptures, as is the interior – on a Latin cross layout – which conserves works of significance, such as Pisanello’s spectacular fresco San Giorgio e la Principessa, the best example of Veronese international Gothic style.
