A lot of productions are currently being filmed in Italy. Dogman, by Matteo Garrone, which is being shown at Cannes this very week, was filmed almost entirely in Castel Volturno with funding from the Region. Filming has also started on the fourth series of Gomorrah and Ciro D’Emilio’s debut piece Il Campione. Meanwhile, the historic centre of Naples, the Samnium area and the Province of Benevento will host film crews for La Banda by Claudio Giovannesi, which is based on Roberto Saviano’s book La paranza dei Bambini.
Inspector Montalbano has instead moved to Civildale del Friuli and Venzone, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, for filming on L’altro capo del filo, the latest episode in the successful series based on the stories by Andrea Camilleri. The FVG Film Commission has supported a number of productions, including the documentary Sei in un paese meraviglioso, which was produced by B/Arts S.r.l. for SKY Arte HD, which was shot in Aquileia and Palmanova, and the second season of La porta rossa, which has returned to Trieste.
Worth mentioning is the virtual reality project of production company BMAD from Montreal, which came to Cinque Terre in partnership with Ente Parco and the Genova-Liguria Film Commission.
Volterra was the location of choice for Polish director Jacek Borcuh’s film on Polish poet and Nobel Prize winner Maria Linde, with some scenes also shot in Cecina and on Elba Island. Massa Marittima and the Val d’Orcia were instead chosen for the second series of Mexican TV series La Reina del Sur. It’s set to be a busy summer for the Tuscany Film Commission. For starters, Leonardo Pieraccioni is returning to the region to film in Mugello and Prato, along with Cinzia TH Torrini, with a series for Rai Uno on the world of Florentine artistic craftsmanship. Elba will also once again serve as the real-life location of Pineta, the fictitious town from Delitti del Barlume.
A bit of Trentino has also made it to Cannes this year, with the out-of-competition screening of Solo: A Star Wars Story by Ron Howard, the second spin-off of Disney’s Star Wars franchise, while Directors’ Fortnight will feature a screening of the Stefano Savona’s film La strada dei Samouni, which involved animators from Trentino with support from the Trentino Film Commission.
