The audiovisual industry is as a driver of economic and cultural development in Valle d’Aosta: this is the conclusion of the TurismOK study into the impact of the Film Commission Vallée d’Aoste activities on the region.

The 181 productions (films and TV series) supported between 2011 and 2014 generated €13 M in direct economic impact in the region. The majority - 70% - of the productions were Italian, as were most documentaries and feature films.

Average direct expenditure in the region exceeded €115 K per production, with an additional €60 K generated in reception, transport and hospitality services.

Audiovisual production in the region also had a direct impact on employment, involving 4,600 employees including technicians, extras and professionals, an average of 32 people per project and a stay of about 20 days in the region.

Cinema has also given visibility to little-known locations. From a geographical point of view, the most popular areas for filming are:

  • Mont Blanc (41% of productions)
  • Aosta and surroundings (37%)
  • Monte Rosa (27%).

Some productions filmed in the region, e.g. the series Rocco Schiavone with Marco Giallini, and Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch’s The Eight Mountains, winner of the 2022 Cannes Jury Prize, have brought in the equivalent of 5 times the initial public investment, proving that cinema is a serious tool for regional enhancement and promotion.

The role of the Film Commission is key: it not only provides economic and logistical support, but also facilitates relationships to create a network of local institutions, talent and production companies.
