On November 14, the European Commission launched the MEDIA Carbon Calculator, a free tool designed to help audiovisual productions calculate their carbon footprint. Before going live, the tool was beta-tested by producers who provided feedback and contributed to the final version.

The MEDIA Carbon Calculator provides a calculation method using data from a range of countries to ensure comparability and consistency, while also allowing for adjustments due to national differences. The main carbon drivers are energy consumption, travel, accommodation, and food services.

Professional audiovisual producers across the European Union can access the tool for free by logging in to the MEDIA Carbon Calculator page via EU Login (Italians can log in via SPID, providing a personal email address). The application analyzes the energy consumption, transportation, and material use at various stages of each project, providing a comprehensive overview of the emissions generated by the production of films, TV series, and other works.

The MEDIA Carbon Calculator highlights the European Commission's commitment to establishing a unified methodology for measuring CO2 emissions in the audiovisual sector, as outlined in the European Media and Audiovisual Action Plan (Action 6 – Towards a climate-neutral media sector).
