Mission Impossible – the saga starring Tom Cruise as agent Ethan Hunt - returns to Italy. In February, with the crew in Venice to shoot scenes set at the famous Carnival, work on the seventh chapter, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, was interrupted by lockdown. Although the production searched for alternative settings, Tom Cruise was strongly in favour of returning to Italy to contribute to the film industry in a country that was one of the first to be harshly penalized by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The production has estimated spending of approximately $35 million in Italy, including $18 million in the city of Rome where, a few days ago, the Campidoglio authorized Lotus Production to start shooting in accordance with all protocols including face coverings, disinfection of settings and equipment and daily testing for crew members. Various streets in the historical centre, especially the Sant’Angelo and Monti neighbourhoods will be used as sets, in particular: largo Corrado Ricci, via dei Fori imperiali, via Panisperna, via della Tribuna Campitelli, via Cavalletti, piazza Lovatelli, via dei Funari, via dei Serpenti and via Sant'Angelo in Pescheria.
The theatrical release of Mission Impossible 7 is presently scheduled for 19 November 2021.
This is not the first time that the adventures of IMF – Impossible Mission Force have been set in Italy: in the third instalment, Tom Cruise and his team filmed near Vatican City, in the Trevi neighbourhood of Rome and the Reggia di Caserta.
