The primary objective of the United States army was to open up a front in continental Europe, defeating the fascist troops to then focus their efforts on fighting Nazi Germany. The game covers the most important stages in this operation: from the landings and subsequent battle on the beaches of Gela, to the arduous journey of the soldiers across the surrounding countryside. The operation ended in a violent battle in the city of Troina on 5 August 1943, which, according to General Lucas, was the “[…] toughest battle Americans had fought since World War I”. Littering the local area to this day are lasting remnants of the conflict. Near roads and hidden among the hills of Western Sicily are bunkers, casemates and pillboxes.

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One takes a step back from the other titles in the series, focusing on just one single unit of soldiers during the events of the Second World War: the 1st Infantry Division of the United States army. This division is what gives the game its title: indeed, the ‘Big Red One’ refers to the red number one emblazoned on the olive-green pentagonal arm patch worn by members of the division. Over the course of the game, the player experiences some of the most famous military operations from the Second World War.
