Where it was filmed 'The Hundred Steps'

One Hundred Steps by Marco Tullio Giordana tells the story of Peppino Impastato, born in Cinisi on January 5, 1948, who became a victim of the Mafia at just 30 years old. He rejected his family's mafia roots, using the sword of words to actively fight the criminal organization.

The one hundred steps of the title refer to the short distance between the homes of Peppino Impastato (Luigi Lo Cascio’s debut role) and mafia boss Gaetano Badalamenti, who ordered his murder. Those one hundred steps represent the boundary between submission and silence, or rebellion and protest.

The film was shot entirely in the locations where the events took place, Cinisi and Terrasini in the metropolitan city of Palermo. In Cinisi, the exteriors of the Impastato and Badalamenti homes are on corso Umberto, a short distance from each other, while Peppino rails against the mafia in piazza Vittorio Emanuele Orlando. The Radio Aut offices are on corso Vittorio Emanuele in Terrasini, while Peppino meets the occupants of the commune in a villa on lungmare Peppino Impastato. His body was found on via Zante, Carini.

I cento passi (One Hundred Steps) is also the title of the film’s key song, by the Modena City Ramblers.

Plot

Rebellious Peppino Impastato refuses to accept his father's subservience to the family that controls drug trafficking and everything that happens in the Sicilian town of Cinisi and its surroundings. He opens a radio station, Radio Aut, with some friends, and starts broadcasting, openly mocking a “Tano seduto, living in Mafiopoli”. His father kicks him out of the house, while defending him from everyone, while his mother continues to secretly support him. Nothing will ever happen to Peppino as long as his father lives but when Luigi Impastato dies in an accident, Peppino has no-one to protect him. He continued to broadcast, refusing to give up, until he was blown up by TNT on the railroad tracks. The Carabinieri called it suicide, but the town disagrees. They never forget him and hundreds march, shouting their rage against the mafia.
