Where it was filmed 'Sciatunostro'

Leandro Picarella's fourth feature film, Sciatustro, is a poetic childhood tale about two friends on the island of Linosa. A summer tale that reflects on time and memory, on memories and the possibility of preserving them.

The cast includes Giovanni Cardamone, Ettore Pesaresi, Pino Sorrentino and Teresa Randazzo. It is the story of inseparable friends, Ettore and Giovannino, aged eleven and seven, who are preparing to spend a last summer together on the small Mediterranean island where they live before Ettore moves to the mainland to continue school.  Giovannino needs to fill the void he leaves on the island and does so with the help of elderly Pino, a keen amateur videographer, and his archive and video camera. Time becomes collective memory, and the breath of the island  – sciatu – that of an entire community.

“The film was inspired by a fundamental desire: to restore voice and breath to a collective memory that is fading, and to attempt to describe a feeling, the one you experience when you separate from someone or something for the first time. The island of Linosa, in the Pelagie Islands, is not just a backdrop for this story: it is a living body, breathing along with its inhabitants. It is land, sea, silence, and wind; it is a childhood gaze, and also an echo of those who have passed before," says the director.

Plot

Inseparable friends, Ettore and Giovannino, aged eleven and seven, prepare to spend a last summer together on a small island in the heart of the Mediterranean. Ettore is moving to the mainland for school, leaving a void on the island for Giovannino.  He finds a way to fill it with the archive and the video camera of Pino, an elderly amateur videographer, where time becomes shared memory, and the island's breath – sciatu – that of an entire community.
