Where it was filmed 'Giovannino Guareschi - Non muoio neanche se mi ammazzano'

Giovannino Guareschi - Non muoio neanche se mi ammazzano is the first drama dedicated to the life of the celebrated writer, one of the world's best-selling authors, who captured the reality around him, bringing memorable characters to life. A strong-willed, consistent, and free man, he remained faithful to his ideals. Directed by Andrea Porporati, it stars Giuseppe Zeno as Giovannino Guareschi.

The film, made for RAI, recounts the ups and downs in the life of one of the world's best-selling authors, who has sold over 20 million copies in 142 languages. His distinctive ironic and irreverent tone often brought him into conflict with institutions and beyond. This extraordinary story, encompassing war, the publishing industry, prison, and concentration camps, also reveals the intimate side of the man, his genuine and simple values and the constants in his life: his love for his sweet wife Ennia (Benedetta Cimatti), always by his side, for his children Alberto and Carlotta, and for his native land, the Po Valley.

The Emilian lowlands, and their unmistakable accent, are the protagonists of the TV film, along with the characters. This region, also the backdrop to his "Little World", is a reassuring microcosm that reflects the inhabitants of Italy, divided by political and ideological differences. Its extraordinary publishing success led Guareschi to the film adaptation of Don Camillo and Peppone, which triumphed in Italy and around the world.

The TV movie about his life could only start there, with his "Little World" which spans several towns in Emilia-Romagna, including Bagnolo in Piano, Brescello (Piazza Matteotti is home to the Town Hall and the Church of Santa Maria Nascente, key locations in the film Don Camillo), Castelfranco Emilia (for the prison), Colorno, Coltaro, Guastalla, Luzzara, Mezzano Rondani, Novellara, Polesine Zibello, Reggio Emilia, Sissa Trecasali, Sorbolo Mezzani. The real locations that inspired the author, where this was filmed, evoke his spirit and the cultural identity of the small towns on the Po River, microcosms of the country at that time.

Loosely based on the book Chi sogna nuovi gerani?, Guareschi’s autobiography edited by his children Alberto and Carlotta, the film was written by Andrea Porporati with the collaboration of Marco Ferrazzoli, from a story by Andrea Porporati, Simone Ortolani, Roberto Vecchi, Emiliano Procucci, Gloria Giorgianni, and benefits from the exclusive consultancy of Giovannino’s son, Alberto Guareschi.

Plot

1945. After imprisonment in Nazi concentration camps, Giovannino Guareschi returns to his home in the lower Emilia region. He has good reason to do so: his beloved wife, Ennia, and children, Albertino and Carlotta, are waiting for him. Here Guareschi feels the need to return to doing what he does best: capturing the world around him, with his free-spirited gaze. He does so in pages filled with drawings and words that brought to life the beloved “Little World” with characters who have become part of Italian culture, Don Camillo and Peppone; the perfect embodiment of their author's irony and perception. The film follows the conception and editorial evolution of his masterpiece through to the celebrated film adaptation, alongside the human and personal journey of Guareschi, a man driven by political passion, who never shied away from fair battles, even when imprisoned in Parma for defaming Alcide De Gasperi in the press. This is a drama that offers an extraordinary tale, encompassing war, the publishing industry, prison, concentration camps, cinema, wealth, poverty, and above all, humanity.
