Description

Prato della Valle, a symbol of Padua, is an elliptical square, one of the largest in Europe (88,620 sqm), second only to Moscow’s Red Square. In the centre of this vast monumental area is isola Memmia, named for Andrea Memmo who commissioned the work, a green planted area surrounded by a still canal which is bordered on both sides with statues of historical figures. The original project called for 88 statues, today the 78 standing (plus 8 pedestals with obelisks, 2 empty) commemorate the city’s most illustrious sons, whether native to Padua or adopted, professors and students who brought honour to the city and to the university of Padua. Four avenues meet in the centre of the island, crossing the canal with small bridges.
