An important centre for scientific research, the Astronomical Observatory of Valle d’Aosta, inaugurated in 2003, is located at 1,600m above sea level in the Valley of Saint-Barthélemy in Lignan, a hamlet of Nus.
At the heart of the Observatory is the evocative cupola for the main telescope. On the south-facing side of the building is the educational terrace used for public and school viewings, which holds seven powerful telescopes, including one that can safely observe the sun. Also on the south side is the scientific terrace which has instruments used in the search for planets outside the solar system. Both terraces can be covered. Between the two is the solar laboratory with instruments to observe the sun. Since 2009 the structure has a planetarium, providing virtual journeys through the cosmos.
