On the eastern slopes of mount Etna at an altitude of 600m, Zafferana Etnea is a popular destination for viewing the volcano’s spectacular eruptions and accessing the nature walks in the area. Known as the pearl of Etna, it is set in the green landscape of the parco dell'Etna and enjoys a view which stretches from the coast of Calabria to the gulf of Syracuse.
Piazza Umberto I is the town’s meeting place and provides access to the belvedere above the park. The palazzo municipale, an elegant art déco building from the late 1800s, stands on the square. Worth of note is the monumental Villa Manganelli in contrada Sarno which once belonged to the princely Paternò-Manganelli family of Catania.
