Oria is located on the hills of Upper Salento, 35km from Brindisi. It was awarded the prestigious Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club and is divided into four districts.
Rione Castello features the castle built by Emperor Frederick II, which dominates the town with its towers and battlements, from Piazza d’Armi which also holds a Basilian crypt. Close by, the historical centre is a maze of narrow streets, stairs and white-washed houses. Rione Judea was originally inhabited by Jewish settlers, Rione Lama is situated on the plains where the water from the highest areas of the town flow and Rione San Basilio is located on a hill where St. Basil established the first Greek liturgy church in Oria. The Cathedral, with its Baroque façade of carparo stone, was rebuilt on the ruins of a Romanesque temple after the earthquake in 1743.
The Sanctuary San Cosimo alla Macchia and zoo, 5km from Oria, is the setting for the traditional fair.
