The little village of Castelmola (ME), founded to defend Taormina against attack from the interior, stands on a peak with a steep drop over the Ionian Sea. The historical centre has a medieval layout and is characterised by picturesque narrow alleys, small squares and little ancient churches. The single road into the village leads straight to piazza Sant’Antonio which has mosaic flooring in black pumice and white stone and the little Church of Sant’Antonio, today the civic auditorium. A stone arch to one side was once located elsewhere, the only entrance into the borgo. From the square, the viewing point offers a magnificent view of the Ionian Coast and Taormina. Not far off is the Church of St. George with a little bell tower and the Mother Church dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari. The ruins of the ancient Norman castle tower over the centre from their panoramic position.
