The Mediterraneo Theatre in Bisceglie follows the classic Greek theatre layout. The open air structure comprises an orchestra area and cavea which seats approximately 600 spectators. The north west facing cavea, dug out of the slope close to the rocky coastline, offers the audience a backdrop of the Adriatic sea with Trani Cathedral and the Gargano Promontory on the horizon.
The semi-circular cavea has deep steps rising upwards that are used for seating with three vertical staircases. Near the stage, overlooking the sea, the cavea is supported by walls in stone. The cavea is partially surrounded by a walkway that allows the audience to reach the lower levels. The orchestra, sitting further down below, sits in a circle. Much of the structure uses dry stone techniques, with Trani stone and some parts in reinforced earth. Local limestone was used for the flooring of the walkways, cavea and orchestra.
