Laghi Alimini

Laghi Alimini, Otranto, LE, Italia

Description

Close to Otranto, the Alimini Lakes, situated amidst the intense green of the Mediterranean maquis and the blue of the nearby coast, add extra interest to the landscape. The larger, northern basin, Alimini Grande, is of karst origin while the southern Alimini Piccolo, also known as Fontanelle, owes its formation to the abrasive action of the sea. Connecting the two is a natural channel, lu Strittu, where, it is believed, the Via Traiana (Trajan’s Way) passed, an extension of the Via Appia which ended at Brindisi.
