The borgo of Carbognano (VT) belonged to the Abbey of Farfa in 1000, however it was later disputed and passed between various feudal overlords during the Middle Ages, all of whom shared the intent of keeping it from the Papal State. The most feared families were certainly the Di Vicos and the Anguillaras who were always fighting each other and the Church and continued their power struggle until 1462 when Pope Pius II entrusted the castle to Count Cristoforo di Carbognano and subsequently to Pietro Paolo Nardini. Under Pope Alexander VI, the feudal estate passed to his lover, Giulia Farnese, wife of Orsino Orsini. The town benefitted from many urban and architectural improvements under Giulia’s leadership: she was responsible for building the Church of Santa Maria and the Baronial Palace. Carbognano remained part of the Duchy of Castro until 1649 when it was taken over by the Church. Basilicas of historical and artistic interest include the Church of San Filippo Neri (1636), the Church of San Pietro, whose construction began in 1780 on the site of a previous building, and the Church of the Madonna della Valle (inside the cemetery) which conserves interesting 16th century frescoes by Antonio del Massaro da Viterbo, known as il Pastura.
