Grotte di Castro (VT) is a typical agricultural village of Etruscan origin near Lake Bolsena. It was occupied first by the Romans, then by the Longobards who razed the entire residential centre to the ground in the 8th century. During the conflicts between feudal lords and the Papacy, the village saw many different rulers before eventually passing to the Church in around 1265. Pope Paul III (1534-49) later incorporated it in the Duchy of Castro.
The village rises on a spur of tuff rock that overlooks the lake and conserves a medieval urban herringbone layout. The surrounding countryside features numerous Etruscan tombs and columbaria (burial structures).
