The protected Marine Area of Torre del Cerrano is located off the shore of the Adriatic coast of Teramo, stretching 3 miles out to sea and 7km along sandy dunes between Silvi and Pineto. The Torre di Cerrano stands in this incomparable natural landscape, in the midst of a pine forest and overlooking the sea. Existing documentation suggests that the Torre was built on a previous harbour tower belonging to the ancient Roman colony of Hatria, a stopping point for ships laden with grain coming from Apulia and Sicily. Its construction, dating to the 16th century, was probably part of the defence consolidation ordered by the Spanish viceroys of the Kingdom of Naples, Alvares di Toledo and Parafan de Ribeira, to rebuff frequent Ottoman and Saracen attacks from the sea. In the early 20th century, the square upper tower, with merlons, was added to the original nucleus, a pyramidal tower on a square base with a parapet supported by massive brackets topped with merlons. Following a complete restoration, the fort is now the headquarters of the Centro di Biologia Marina.
