Amantea is a well-known seaside destination on the Tyrrhenian coast, not far from Cosenza and Catanzaro. The town is divided in two: the ancient historical centre is perched on a rocky hill while the new centre stretches out along the coast.
The historical centre has alleyways, narrow streets and 19th century palaces that intertwine on the rock of the Castle of Amantea, whose ruins are nestled in vegetation and can be visited along pathways. Many alleyways lead into wide open squares with fountains, some divided by gardens and ornamental plants.
Beneath the old city is the Cave of Amantea, a natural opening that had strategic functions in the past given its proximity to city and castle.
The principal thoroughfare of the modern residential centre in the flatland is viale Margherita, which extends down to the Marina, a very popular area with beaches, clubs and the tourist harbour of Campora San Giovanni, a departure point for boats to the Aeolian islands.
