Description

In Fossacesia (CH), the majestic Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere rises between sky and sea, one of the most interesting examples of Benedictine architecture in Abruzzo. The complex, comprising church and monastery, stands in isolation on the top of a hilly relief known as the promontory of Venus, overlooking the gulf of the same name and the stunning landscape that unfolds from the Maiella range to the Adriatic coast. In ancient times, this was the site of a large temple dedicated to the goddess Venus Conciliatrice (Venus, in her lesser-known attribute of mediator of family unity) which gives the church its name. The Benedictines were a significant, and tenacious, example ability, enterprise and organization for the populations of Abruzzo, who were followed by the agricultural revolution and new demographic growth of the time. The Abbey seems to incorporate this sense of solidity with its imposing yet simple and sober structure, whose unexpectedly harmonious aspect unites the various moments of rebuilding and renovation that took place over time. Architectural features of note include the magnificent Portal of the Moon, the large frescoed crypt, the cloister. The long tree-lined drive that leads to the Abbey and the panoramic position with its breath-taking view of the spectacular coast of the trabocchi add to its charm.
