The Borgo di Leri Cavour, in Trino (VC), was bought in 1822 by Michele Benso di Cavour. The family transformed the entire complex into a 900-hectare agricultural farm, very ahead of its times. Camillo Benso himself managed the village, experimenting techniques for increasing the yield of rice cultivation.
The fate of Leri Cavour, however, was sealed with the decadence that set in in the 1970s when the inhabitants were forced to leave the village. The former residence of Count Cavour is now reduced to overgrown vegetation, broken windows, crumbling walls and doors, graffiti and dangerous floors.
In the 1980s the enormous estate became property of ENEL and was converted into an electrical power plant. For a decade, Leri Cavour was used as offices and inhabited by plant workers. When work finished in 1996, the village was again abandoned. The estate remained property of ENEL for many years until the Comune of Trino bought it back.
