The borgo of Bomarzo is located in the Tiber valley in the heart of the Tuscia territory. This area was intensely inhabited by Etruscans and later the Romans who conquered it around the 5th century BCE and ascribed the population to the Arniense tribe. Numerous remains of the past can be found in the area around the borgo: the Etruscan pyramid, necropolises, tagliate, the ruins of a Roman aqueduct and the kilns of the Volumni.
The borgo is dominated by the imposing Palazzo Orsini, built in the 1500s and expanded over the centuries, first by the Lante della Rovere family and then by the Borghese family. Today the town hall, the palazzo conserves frescoes by artists from the school of Pietro da Cortona. Another symbolic building in Bomarzo is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, built on an Etruscan structure and topped with a bell tower.
The five rioni (or neighbourhoods) of the borgo, each with its own characteristics, compete in the annual Palio (horse race) on 25 April.
Bomarzo is also known for its Monster Park, built in 1500 by Prince Pier Francesco Orsini, a nature park ornamented with numerous basalt sculptures of legendary animals, gods and monsters.
