The town of Camaiore, situated at the foot of the Apuan Alps in the province of Lucca, was founded by the Romans. The medieval character of the historical centre and its surroundings has been conserved in a range of ancient buildings: the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta dating to 1260 on a Latin cross; Church of San Lazzaro, with its cloister; the Romanesque structure 7th-century Badia di San Pietro; and Palazzo Tori Massoni, which houses the archaeological museum. Via dei Mezzo is the pedestrian thoroughfare that crosses the city centre and contains numerous restaurants, bars and shops.
The coastal village of Lido di Camaiore which overlooks a wide stretch of beach in the Versilia area started to become increasingly popular in the aftermath of WWII.
