The town of Agordo (Belluno) is the administrative centre of the Conca Agordina in the heart of the Dolomites. It was the site of great mining activity, with the Valle Imperina mines and the mining school – established in 1867 and still one of the most prestigious in Europe – while also being an important administrative and commercial crossroad between Venice and the Tyrol.
The historical centre features buildings dating to the 16th and 17th centuries, probably built over older footprints. The central piazza della Libertà leads to the area known as “il Broi” which is a large rectangular meadow surrounded by trees. Villa Crotta - De’ Manzoni overlooks the Broi, recognisable by its porticoes, neogothic loggia and “pops”, statues of famous people and gods.
Rising above the residential centre are the two bell towers of the Archdeaconal Church of Santa Maria Nascente; niches on the façade below the roof hold statues of the 3 theological virtues (charity, faith and hope), while David and Moses feature on the sides.
Agordo was the birthplace of Tito Livio Burattini, a famous mathematician, and hosts the headquarters of Luxottica, a world leader in the eyewear sector.
