Verona’s Palazzo del Podestà (also known as Palazzo della Prefettura), in piazza dei Signori, previously the residence of the Scaligeri ruling family, was one of the leading cultural courts of the Middle Ages. Built in the late 13thcentury, it hosted poets, painters, sculptors, musicians and artists of the period.
The articulated complex of buildings extends on three sides around a rectangular inner courtyard built in the 14thcentury by Cansignorio and characterized by a double order loggia with a portico. The façade is ornamented by a splendid Renaissance portal by Michele Sanmicheli which evokes Roman triumphal arches.
