Description

Porta Borsari, a majestic Roman gate dating to the 1st century BCE, was once the main entrance to the city of Verona leading to the decumanus, today corso Porta Borsari. Built in Verona white stone, it features the typical architectural characteristics of the early empire, articulated across three levels.
At street level, two round arches are topped by rows of arched apertures. Initially known as Porta Iovia, from a nearby temple dedicated to Giove (Jupiter), it was renamed Borsari in the late Middle Ages, after the "bursarii" who managed taxes at the gate.
